Gary Lee
Writer/Designer
Gary Lee (Class of 1974) has worked on
countless projects both in Australia and overseas as a writer,
designer and curator.
Gary
graduated
from the
Australian National University with honours in anthropology
and since then has made a mark In the area of Aboriginal arts,
design and research. In 1996 he won the Canberra Fashion
Awards on his first attempt. He has given many lectures and
written wildly on Aboriginal art and is a noted Aboriginal art
curator.
In 1994 he
curated Art of the Western Desert and
The Image
Black;
Aboriginal art
and photography for the Department or Foreign Affairs and
Wade, which toured Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bangladesh. For
Perspecta 99 in Sydney he co-curated Love Magic:
erotics and polities In Indigenous Art at the SH Ervin
Gallery. Gary provided the first Aboriginal design to be
portrayed on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a Rainbow Serpent, for
the City of Sydney’s New Year’s Eve
Celebrations.
For the Miliennium
New Years Eve he was commissioned to design the Image of Uluru
for the Bridge. He is currently working on the New Year’s Eve
Bridge effect concept for 2002 to reflect the International
Year of Fresh Water.
Since 1994 he
has undertaken a photo-. documentary series in India, Nepal
and Bangladesh.
A passionate
advocate for Larrakia arts, Gary is curating Dirula:
Contemporary Larrakia Art, the first major exhibition
featuring contemporary Larrakia art practice, opening In
Darwin in the latter part of 2002. |
